Langton Castle stood near Duns from Vipont origins to Cockburn ownership in 1330, becoming a border seat powerful enough for Mary, Queen of Scots to visit in 1566. Its end came abruptly when Cockburn of Langton died at Fontenoy in 1745, the estate passed to Gavin, and the castle and village were demolished for a new mansion. What remains is a gateway and a absent place, remembering how quickly ownership, war and fashion can erase an old world.

Langton Castle was built in the 13th century by the de Langton family, a prominent Scottish noble lineage. It is remembered for its strategic role in the defense of southern Scotland during the medieval period.
