Drochil Castle is an unfinished double-tenement ruin in the Scottish Borders, built by James Douglas, 4th Earl of Morton, starting in 1578. Its central corridor runs through every storey, opening chambers on both sides instead of forcing one room to lead into the next. Morton designed it as a palace and castle where he might retire, but death came before the work was finished, leaving his ambition exposed in bare whinstone and red sandstone.
