This blue commemorative plaque records: Jedburgh Abbey. King David 1 of Scotland founded this Abbey in the 12th Century. He brought a colony of Augustinian Canons from Beauvais, in France. At first it was a rich and important abbey but it suffered many attacks by invading English armies and was ravaged at least six times. After the Reformation of 1560 and until 1875, it housed the parish church. Recorded plaque organisation: Royal Burgh of Jedburgh.
Jedburgh Abbey, founded by King David I of Scotland in the 12th century, was initially a prosperous Augustinian monastery but suffered repeated attacks from English forces; after the Scottish Reformation, it served as a parish church until 1875.
