Commemorative plaque 89775

This blue commemorative plaque records: The Newgate. This building, begun in 1756, replaced the Tolbooth which stood at the top of the Canongate. It contained a courthouse and a prison. The spire was added in 1791 and contains three bells, including one from the Abbey. The burgh arms, dated 1720, above the arch came from the well head of the town's first public water supply. The Newgate, constructed beginning in 1756, served as a significant civic structure housing both a courthouse and prison for Edinburgh, replacing the earlier Tolbooth; its addition of a spire in 1791 further marked it as an important landmark.
