Castle Knowe

Bastle (medieval) - (post Medieval)(possible), Building(s) (post Medieval)

What is recorded here

Castle Knowe rises beside the old Kilruskin road as a battered medieval mound, likely holding a lost fort or castle hill that watched traffic between Ardrossan and Fairlie. People removed part of its rampart in the 1890s, cultivation cut into it, and the burn was forced into a culvert, yet the knowe still stands prominent near North Kilruskin Farm. It may have been a place of judgment, a trader’s checkpoint, or merely a rounded hill dressed in castle names, but its position makes it feel like a guard stone left behind when the region changed hands.
Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Castle Knowe as Bastle (medieval) - (post Medieval)(possible), Building(s) (post Medieval). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 1m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.

The historic-place record does not grant public access. Check current conditions and ownership before entering land or a building.
