Ayton Castle is a ruined Pele Tower built in 1410 by Sir Ralph Eure to withstand Scottish raids. Its vaulted kitchen, hidden staircases and summit fire basket turned a private home into a regional warning system. When comfort replaced fear, the family left, the stones fed a bridge, and the shell became a cowshed.
Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Ayton Castle as Policies (18th Century), Policies (medieval)(possible). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 10m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.
Ayton Castle was built in the 18th century, possibly on the site of an earlier medieval structure, and was held by the Seton family, who were historically significant in Scottish nobility. The castle is remembered for its architectural heritage and its association with the Setons, a family with a long and distinguished history in the region.
