Why this matters

A local fairy fort (ringfort/rath); wider significance not recorded.

What is recorded here

On a low limestone outcrop within a modern farmyard, the enclosure is located 120m S and W of the Greanagh River. Depicted as a six-sided field on the 1840 OSi 6-inch map and later OSi maps. Not depicted as an antiquity on any OSi map. Shown as a polygonal-shaped enclosure (approx. dims. 30m N-S x 35m E-W) on the OSi 1897 25-inch map with farmhouse immediately to N. On this map the enclosure appears to have functioned as a small paddock or garden belonging to the farmhouse. Partially levelled site inspected in 1996 by ASI and described as consisting of a raised semi-circular shaped area enclosed by a drystone wall (dims. 21.4m N/S x 33.2m E/W), the N half of which has been largely levelled by the building of a hay barn and silage pit. The best surviving section of the enclosure boundary is visible at SW (dims. int. H 0.85-0.9m; ext. H 1.35m) where a drystone wall (Wth. 3.6m) with an earthen core survives. The enclosure is now utilised as a paddock abutting the S side of the farm buildings. The remainder of the enclosure is denuded and defined by a hedgerow and trees that are visible on Google earth orthophoto taken 28/06/2018.
