This blue commemorative plaque records: This lookout was given in 1935 by E. F. Benson when Mayor of Rye. He immortalised the town as "Tilling" in his Mapp and Lucia novels
E. F. Benson, a British writer known for his humorous works, particularly the Mapp and Lucia series set in the fictional town of Tilling based on Rye, contributed to local heritage by donating this lookout when he was Mayor of Rye in 1935.
