This blue commemorative plaque records: "The Power-Looms Riot. On 25 April 1826, people who feared that power-looms would take away their jobs attacked this building. Then the woollen mill of W. & R. Turner. Armed with hammers, ratchets, picks and likes. They destroyed 106 looms. A man and a woman were transported to Australia for their part in the riot. Placed here by Airtours 1995." The Power-Looms Riot of 1826 reflects the textile workers' resistance against industrialization, specifically the introduction of power-looms which threatened job security; it highlights the social and economic tensions during the Industrial Revolution.
