This blue commemorative plaque records: The Chatterton Fight. On this site 26 April 1826 Handloom weavers engaged in destroying the power looms in Thomas Aitken's mill were fired on by soldiers of the 60th Foot. Four men and one woman were killed. A fifth man, an onlooker, was also later shot dead. Recorded plaque organisation: Edenfield Local History Society.
The Chatterton Fight marks a significant event during the Lancashire weavers' riots, where handloom weavers clashed with military forces protecting industrial machinery, highlighting the violent tensions between labor and early industrialization in 19th-century England.
