Marianne and I walked the rain-slicked field at Roonivoolin, where local memory says Essex's soldiers killed women. I touched the wet grass and imagined their fear, not glorifying the men but refusing to erase the women's ends. Marianne repeated their absence aloud, giving the story a shape it might have lost.
