Death and marriage both came to that village through one door. Annie walked in at seventeen and left never. The boy who followed her into the chamber came out married, a father, and older at the knees. He stopped running the farm because his hands would not stop shaking. The stone did not kill him. It took the boy part and gave back a man who could hear every room in the house at once.
