Tower Colliery was the oldest continuously working deep-coal mine in the United Kingdom, and possibly the world, until its closure in 2008. Located near Hirwaun and Rhigos, it remained the last mine of its kind in the South Wales Valleys. The pit closed in 1994 after government resistance, but 239 miners pooled their redundancy money to buy it back. They marched into the shaft in 1995 with one balloon for each worker, keeping the old stone breathing until 2008.
