Castle Semple is a ruined peel tower on a rocky islet in Castle Semple Loch, built shortly before 1560 by Robert, 3rd Lord Semple, who named it Defender of the Faith while opposing the Scottish Reformation. Its stone walls still rise from the water, now joined to the shore by a curved earthen embankment formed through drainage and farming. The tower was made for retreat and resistance, yet carved stones inside suggest the Semples also lived there with comfort and pride when danger eased.
Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Castle Semple as No Class (event) (period Unassigned). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 100m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.
Built by the Semple family in the 13th century, Castle Semple is remembered as a historic seat of the Earls of Wigtown and for its strategic role in the Scottish Borders region.
The historic-place record does not grant public access. Check current conditions and ownership before entering land or a building.
