Johnstone Castle is a 16th-century tower house in Renfrewshire that survived the demolition of its grander mansion in 1950. Chopin visited in 1848, first praising the opulent rooms before the dreadful weather and a carriage crash left him depressed and shaken. The town later consumed the estate, leaving only the central square tower and a crow-stepped bartizan section to stand against the rain.
