Stone circle — multiple-stone in Readrinagh

Stone circle — multiple-stone

Why this matters

Likely dating to the Late Neolithic or Early Bronze Age, this stone circle may have had ceremonial or astronomical significance. The central stone suggests a focal point for ritual activity, while the surrounding ring could have marked seasonal events or communal gatherings.

What is recorded here

In scrub-covered cutaway bog, sloping down slightly to the NE. Indicated as a circular stony area (diam. c. 15m) on the 1846 OS 6-inch map. A ring of twenty nine stones with another stone in the centre forming 'Cloca Breaca' were recorded in the 1940s (Schools Manuscript, Co. Kerry). The diameter of this circle was given as 35 feet [10.66m] and the dimensions of the stones being 2 feet 7 inches [0.77m] high by 2 feet 8 in [0.8m] in width and 1 foot 8 in [0.5m] in thickness (ibid.). There are no visible remains of this possible stone circle. Compiled by: Elizabeth Byrne, Ursula Egan and Sheila Ronan, Archaeological Survey Unit, University College, Cork.
