Ecclesiastical enclosure in Rathcusack OR Rathcorrig

Ecclesiastical enclosure

What is recorded here

On brow of gentle W-facing slope with good views from S-W-N. The River Nore flows roughly N-S c. 300m to the W. A public road runs roughly N-S c. 10m to the E. There is a medieval church (KK024-059001-) centrally placed within the ecclesiastical enclosure. A circular area (overall diam. c. 63m; int. diam. c. 50m) enclosed by an earthen bank (int. H 1.1m; ext. H 1.7m; Wth 7m) and external fosse (Wth 3.7m; D 0.6m). A later stone wall, enclosing the graveyard (KK024-059002-) was built on the fosse of the ecclesiastical enclosure, the internal bank of the enclosure being retained within the stone wall of the graveyard. The fosse is best seen where it projects beyond the stone wall in the S sector from ESE-S-SSW, it has been infilled from W-NW. Compiled by: Jean Farrelly Date of upload: 29 September 2021
