What is recorded here

Cave is a vanished underground passage inside a Galway rath, named on maps from 1838 to 1921 but lost beneath overgrowth by 1952 and gone from sight by 1982. It may have been a entry way, hiding place or water route, shaped by hands and forgotten by grass. The land kept its shape long enough to be measured, then took back the entry. What is missing is not nothing; it is the part humans made and the part the landscape reclaimed.

Within the interior of a rath (GA114-154----). Named 'Cave' on the 1838 and 1921 edition of the OS 6-inch map. No visible surface trace survives. When McCaffrey (1952, 289, no. 27) visited the monument he could not locate the Man-made underground passage due to dense overgrowth.
