HART'S FORT in Tirkelly, County Down, is an early Christian rath where a circular bank still guards the memory of a small, defensible life. The name suggests a hart may have leapt the ridge or a keeper may have watched the valley from its crest. In either case the fort remained a marker of identity, pride and resistance long after its builders stopped coming and going.
The official Northern Ireland record identifies this as RATH: HART'S FORT. Recorded period: E.CHRIST.. The official map point was placed at the centre of the recorded archaeological site from the source map reference.
