Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Railstown (Railstown parish) is a fairy fort or earthen ringfort in Railstown (Railstown parish), County Tipperary, Ireland. It occupies an oval area 42 metres north-south and about 39 metres east-west on a high point cut into south and west-facing hillslopes. A substantial bank 7.35 metres overall wide and 3.25 metres high externally defines the enclosure, best preserved from southwest to southeast and almost reduced to a scarp from southeast to southwest. A fosse 9.1 metres overall wide and 1.15 metres deep runs outside the bank, deepest from northwest to northeast where it cuts into the south-facing hillslope and shallow at 0.3 metres from northeast to south-southeast.
In area of disused pasture and enclosed by pasture to E, S, W and tillage to N. On high point of land, cut into S and W-facing hillslopes. Oval area (dims. 42m N-S; c. 39m E-W) defined by substantial bank (overall Wth 7.35m; Wth at top 1.1m; int. H 0.4m; ext. H 3.25m) best preserved SW-SE and almost reduced to scarp SE-SW. Fosse (overall Wth 9.1m; basal Wth 4.3m; D 1.15m) best preserved NW-NE where cut into S-facing hillslope and shallow (D 0.3m) NE-SSE. Fosse backfilled SSE-SSW due to trackway along S-side and relatively recently backfilled SSW-NW. Interior slopes down gently to S and is densely overgrown around perimeter which is encroaching into rest of interior. Topsoil excavated to W of monument and earthen material deposited against exterior of bank SSW-NW and saplings planted. Road and temporary dwelling erected to west of same.
