What is recorded here

In pasture, on high ground at top of stream valley, surrounded by hills. Square area (27m N-S; 26.5m E-W) enclosed by earthen bank (int. H 1m; ext. H 1m), stone-faced in parts. External fosse evident as differential growth pattern and as slight depression (D 0.2m) on S side. Interior grass-covered with furze bushes in NE quadrant and rushes in W half, close to bank. On 1842 OS 6-inch map, indentation in hachured bank at SW corner respects spring well; no visible surface trace of well. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 4: North Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2000). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
