Colwyn Castle rose twice on a Roman fort near Builth Wells, changing hands between Normans and Welsh rulers until Rhys ap Gruffydd destroyed the first in 1196. Henry III and Ralph de Mortimer rebuilt it as Maud's Castle to guard Maelienydd, but the arrangement faded during the 14th century. Now a farmhouse occupies the site, while the old earthworks still mark the place where kings, husbands, tenants and invaders kept turning the same stone over and over.
