Builth Castle was the first Welsh castle Edward I built, raising stone on a battered older mound in 1277 before running out of money in 1282. It passed through lovers, traitors and royal children until Arthur died young in 1502, leaving behind a mound, ditches and the ghost of every hand that grabbed it.

Builth Castle was built by the Normans in the 11th century, likely under the authority of Robert of Rhuddlan, to control the strategic crossing point of the River Irfon. It is remembered for its role in the Norman conquest of mid-Wales and its association with the powerful de Braose family.
