This blue commemorative plaque records: South gate 1799. Rhayader's only toll gate to survive intact the Rebecca Riots 1843
The south gate in Rhayader is one of the few toll gates that survived the Rebecca Riots of 1843, a series of protests by Welsh farmers against unfair toll charges and oppressive laws.
