Knowles Battery stands as a partially demolished Victorian fort beside Plymouth, built between 1863 and 1870 to shield the naval dockyard with thirteen guns. Children now run through the school constructed on its remains in the 1960s, perhaps unaware that their playground sits inside a weapon designed to stop invading fleets. The sturdy masonry walls still mark the boundary where human ambition met the sea, transforming a killing place into an ordinary classroom without losing its strange history.
