Plumbtree Fort — Prospecthill

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

On the summit of a hillock in grassland. Circular rath (diam. 33m), in fair condition, defined by two banks and an intervening fosse. A field wall overlies the outer bank from N to E and another field wall cuts it at S. The inner bank is breached by numerous cow gaps but a gap (Wth 2m) at E may be original. There is a possible hut site (GA094-044001-) within the W sector of the interior. Holt (1912, 227-8) noted a possible 'bailey' (GA094-044002-) to the E. (McCaffrey 1952, 121. no. 34) Compiled by: Galway Archaeological Survey, UCG Date of upload: 9 March 2017
