Machany House and Strathallan Castle stood together as the Drummond estate, but the 11th Viscount sold the land in 1910 because the larger residence had already taken over the role of the family home. The castle became a tenant house for Graeme Whitelaw before leaving Drummond control entirely, turning a centuries-old ancestral seat into an ordinary transaction.

Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Strathallan Castle as Unenclosed Settlement (period Unassigned)(possible). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 10m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.

Strathallan Castle was built by the Comyn family in the 13th century and later held by the Stewart family. It is remembered for its strategic importance in the Scottish Wars of Independence and for being the site of a significant truce between Robert the Bruce and the Comyns in 1314.
