Backhill Wood still holds medieval rig and furrow marks, though Dupplin Castle Policies has changed since that first planting. The land may have been farmed, abandoned, or forgotten before becoming wood again. What is clear is that people worked this soil long before the trees covered it.

Dupplin Castle was built by the Comyn family in the 13th century and later held by the Earls of Perth. It is important as the site of the Battle of Dupplin Moor in 1332, a key event in the Wars of Scottish Independence.
