What is recorded here
Huntingtower Castle stands as a prehistoric enclosure and later medieval seat where the Ruthven family plotted against King James VI before losing their name and lands in 1600. The castle absorbed raids, banquets, plague quarantine and royal forgiveness, yet it still belongs to the men who bent the crown rather than the crown that broke them. What survives is not a polished monument but a boundary line drawn across living memory, marking the place where loyalty became a weapon and mercy became a trap.
Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Huntingtower Castle as Cropmark(s) (period Unknown), Enclosure (prehistoric). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 1m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.
Huntingtower Castle is a 14th-century tower house located in Perth and Kinross, Scotland, built by the Ruthven family, a powerful noble lineage. It is historically significant as the site of the Raid of Ruthven in 1582, where it was captured by Protestant nobles who forced the young King James VI to appoint them as regents.
The historic-place record does not grant public access. Check current conditions and ownership before entering land or a building.
