Taymouth Castle rose in 1842 when John Campbell replaced the older Balloch Castle with a neo-Gothic mansion whose blue-grey stone came from Bolfracks. Francis Bernasconi shaped its central staircase, while Cornelius Dixon painted ceilings that still glow beneath medieval glass and Renaissance wood. The castle stood empty from 1982 until American owners rebuilt it into nine suites, completing the work in November 2024. It remains a place where grandeur, neglect and renewal keep turning over one another like water in the River Tay.

Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Taymouth Castle as Country House (18th Century), Hotel (20th Century), School (20th Century). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 1m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.

Taymouth Castle was built in the 18th century by the Campbell family, specifically for the Dukes of Argyll, and is remembered as a significant example of Scottish baronial architecture. It later served as a hotel and school in the 20th century.
