What is recorded here
Kincardine Castle is a Victorian country house built between 1894 and 1896 for Mary Pickering on the site of an earlier building called Kincardine Lodge. David Barclay Niven and Herbert Hardy Wigglesworth designed it in the Scots Baronial style, blending features from five centuries of building traditions into towers, turrets and crow-stepped gables. The house still stands within a 3,000-acre estate beside the River Dee, serving as a private home and venue for weddings, dining and meetings.
Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Kincardine Castle as Castle (medieval). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 1m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.
Kincardine Castle was built in the late 13th or early 14th century by the Comyn family, a powerful noble dynasty in medieval Scotland. It is historically significant as a strategic stronghold associated with the Comyns, who played a key role in Scottish politics and the Wars of Scottish Independence.
The historic-place record does not grant public access. Check current conditions and ownership before entering land or a building.
