Methven Castle stands as a square, four-storey block with corner towers, built in 1664 by John Mylne for Patrick Smythe of Braco. It replaced older defences that survived a 1444 siege and hosted Margaret Tudor until her death in 1541. The building has lost both side wings since the 1950s, leaving the central house with a new roof and crow-stepped gables on its north front.
