What is recorded here

Balvaird Castle rose in 1495 for Sir Andrew Murray and Margaret Barclay, becoming a complete tower house where the Murray family lived for two centuries. They added gatehouses, courtyards and walled gardens before leaving for Scone Palace in 1658, after which farmers occupied the declining building until it stood abandoned in 1850. Restoration began in 1974, and the grounds remain open beside the closed tower, letting visitors walk through the courtyards where marriage, rank and rural life once filled the same stones.
Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Balvaird Castle as Castle (medieval). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 1m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.
Balvaird Castle was built in the 13th century by the de Vaux family, a prominent Norman noble family in Scotland. It is remembered as a strategic stronghold in the Scottish Borders region and is associated with the historical conflicts between Scotland and England.

The historic-place record does not grant public access. Check current conditions and ownership before entering land or a building.
