Hen Gastell, meaning old castle, first appeared in writing in 1295 as a Welsh earthen fortification near Saundersfoot. It became a residence by 1636, passed through Wogan and Stokes families, and was rebuilt in the 1870s with red sandstone carried as coal barge ballast. The estate still belongs to descendants of Sir William Thomas Lewis, keeping its gates closed while managing farms, cottages and coastline.
