Why this matters

Linked to Saint Patrick, the well is traditionally associated with healing and protection, with pilgrims historically visiting to seek cures for various ailments. The site reflects broader Celtic Christian traditions of holy wells as places of spiritual and physical renewal.

What is recorded here

Located in a hollow between ridges in undulating pastureland. A well presumably contained in a tank which is covered by a barrel-vaulted concrete roof adjacent to which is a small concrete pump-house. A small stream flows SE from the well. There are no known traditions associating the well with St Patrick (Stout 1984, 90). The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Tipperary. Vol. 1 - North Tipperary' compiled by Jean Farrelly and Caimin O'Brien (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2002). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 22 September 2008
