What is recorded here

Situated on top of a low rise, in gently undulating pasture, directly overlooking bog to N and with good views in all directions. Depicted on the 1837 OS 6-inch map as an oval-shaped tree-lined earthwork. Levelled monument that was upstanding in 1970 when it was described as the remains of a roughly circular-shaped area (approx. dims. 31m ENE-WSW; 29m NNW-SSE) defined by a slight earthen bank with traces of an external fosse visible from SSE-S-SW. The perimeter is represented by a very slight scarp (approx. H 0.5m) with a slight external fosse visible from NW-N-NE. The original entrance is not visible. The interior has traces of cultivation ridges running E-W. A modern field fence intersected both ends of the bank. An ESB pole is on the bank at SW. Cropmark of levelled monument visible today on Digital Globe aerial photography. Compiled by: Alison McQueen, Vera Rahilly and Caimin O’Brien Date of upload: 04 June 2019
