Its recorded inscription reads: Richard Lyfe, 47 years a Jurat, five times Bailiff and three times Mayor of Hastings, four times Bailiff of the Cinque Ports to Yarmouth, nine times Burgess in Parliament and canopy-bearer at two coronations, lived here until his death in 1605.
