Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Ring of Brodgar as Henge (neolithic) - (bronze Age), Rune Inscribed Stone (norse), Stone Circle (neolithic) - (bronze Age). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 10m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.

The Ring of Brodgar is a Neolithic henge and stone circle, likely constructed between 2500 and 2000 BCE, and may have been used for ceremonial or astronomical purposes. Later, during the Norse period, a rune-inscribed stone was added, suggesting continued cultural or spiritual significance in the area.
