Maes Howe

Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Maes Howe as Chambered Cairn (neolithic), Rune Inscribed Stone(s) (norse). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 10m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.

Neolithic chambered cairn with later Norse rune-inscribed stones, dating to around 3500 BCE and 11th–13th century CE respectively. It is significant as one of Orkney's most important prehistoric monuments and for its rare Norse inscriptions, including the Runic inscription of the Norwegian earl Rognvald Kali.
