This green commemorative plaque records: Old Police Office Yard. The yard gives access, in the centre, to the old town house of the Askew family of Middleton Hall near Sedburgh, built in the early 18th century. Anthony Askew was born in Kendal in 1722 and had a notable career as an academic at Cambridge University, dying in 1774. Down the steps, on the corner of Finkle St, was the old Registrar’s office, with the police office above. In the basement were the police cells. Recorded plaque organisation: Kendal Civic Society.
