This blue commemorative plaque records: Market Hall. Designed by Philip Charles Hardwick for Durham Markets, a company created by Act of Parliament in 1851, on the site of New Place, the Tudor town house of the Earls of Westmorland. Built in two phases and opened in December 1852. Extensively refurbished in 1996 to facilitate 6 days per week trading. Recorded plaque organisation: City of Durham Parish Council.
