This grey commemorative plaque records: The Boom Towers were built in 1344 to defend the approach to Norwich by water. The use of a chain across the water, between the two towers, controlled river traffic and prevented the unauthorised entry of vehicles. The eastern tower is known as the Devil's Tower.
