This white commemorative plaque records: The Abbey Lawn Cottages. Dating from 1410, these timber-framed houses were a property speculation by the Benedictine monks of Tewkesbury Abbey. Originally constructed with a shop facing the street and living accommodation behind, they were rented to merchants and their families. Wooden shutters opened onto the street from which goods were sold. Most of the houses are still lived in but one, the Merchant's House, has been restored and furnished to show the original shop and home construction. Today the buildings are owned by the Abbey Lawn Trust, a registered charity who restored the row between 1967 and 1973. Recorded plaque organisation: Tewkesbury Civic Society.
