This stone commemorative plaque records: Incorporated within these walls is the Black Tower of Drumlanrig, Hawick residence of the Douglas family and later of the Scotts of Buccleuch. This tower built in the 16th century on an L-shaped plan almost certainly replaced a still earlier tower which in its turn has been preceded by the late 12th century wooden tower of the Lovels on the mote.
