This bronze commemorative plaque records: The Reading Room Substation. This early 18th century building was originally two louses each containing two rooms. Local tradition has it that a family of 13 once lived in the small upper flat. About 1850, the lower flat was used as a reading room. here, Thomas Drysdale, a local Stone Mason, read newspapers pamphlets and books to other inhabitants of the Burgh. In 1960 the building, was restored by the South of Scotland Electricity Board in consultation with Major Michael Crichton Stuart, M.C., the National Trust for Scotland, the Town Council of the Royal Burgh of Falkland and the Fife County Planning Authority. The substation was commissioned by Mrs. Crichton Stuart on Friday, 16th September, 1960.
