This blue commemorative plaque records: Brixworth Union Workhouse. This workhouse opened in 1837 at a cost of £5,800. Designed to cater for paupers in a population of 13,000, it usually held about 150, with separate quarters for men, woman, children and vagrants. There was also an infirmary and chapel.
