This commemorative plaque records: Near this site in 1776 the first commercial beam engine to the designs of james watt was erected by messrs boulton & watt for messrs bentley & co this tablet was unveiled by the right hon. the earl of northesk 27th may 1959 it was erected by the directors of british rolling mills ltd in co-operation with the newcomen society Recorded plaque organisation: British Rolling Mills Limited.
