This blue commemorative plaque records: The Buttercross In 1606 Richard Ashcombe left £50 to build "a house over and above the cross." The clock was added in 1683 after a bequest from William Blake of Cogges. Tradition has it that a statue of the Virgin Mary stood on the central pillar.
