This black commemorative plaque records: Mary Astell 1666-1731 If all men are born free, how is it that all women are born slaves? Philosopher, theologian, early feminist writer and educator. Born and raised in Newcastle upon Tyne. Educated by her uncle, Rev. Ralph Astell, using the library of St. Nicholas Church (now Cathedral). Recorded plaque organisation: Newcastle City Council.
