This blue commemorative plaque records: The Fire Holes Spaced along the dockyard wall are a number of square iron plates with a large circular hole through them. These were the fire holes which were used to pass hoses, connected to the dockyard pumps, through the wall in the event of a fire breaking out in the town. Blue Town was mainly comprised of tightly packed wooden houses and was highly vulnerable to fires. There were two main fires in 1827 and 1830 which destroyed large sections of Blue Town.
